How could it get any better than having a renowned Anantara Spa on Samui? Well, that’s simple – have two! And with each one being part of a prestigious resort (Anantara Bophut Resort & Spa and Anantara Lawana Resort & Spa, respectively), you’re guaranteed a 5-star spa experience at both. But although the extensive list of treatments on offer at each is almost identical, and the expertise of the therapists is the same, the spas themselves are very different and lovely in their own way.

And in no particular order, I’ll start with the award-winning one in Anantara Bophut Resort & Spa (it won the World’s Best Hotel Spa Asia Award in 2009 and one of Conde Nast The Readers’ Spa Awards in 2010). Although it’s part of the plush resort, it’s in a totally separate area. The only parts that are shared are the magnificent bridge-style entrance and the main lobby.

From there, you’re taken along a timber walkway and through an ornate arch. Then across a lotus pond to the spa reception itself which is on its own island. Having chosen your treatment, you’re led through another entrance, and this time it’s into a huge tropical garden where the six air-conditioned suites are located along one side. And each one has floor-to-ceiling glass windows looking out upon its very own private courtyard, where you can have an open-air bath and shower.

A favourite treatment at this spa is the famous Shirodhara therapy where warm oil is flowed onto the centre of your forehead, reflex-balancing your brain. But this is just one of a wide range of superb treatments offered here, including their fabulous Anantara Signature Massage which uses a special blend of oils combined with purpose-designed movements to stimulate
circulation and promote deep relaxation.

Next, we take the journey over to the other Anantara Spa (which will, no doubt, also be award-winning some time soon), which is located in the plush new Anantara Lawana Resort & Spa right at the quiet northern end of Chaweng Beach on the way to the airport. And, again, there’s a charming approach to the main reception and you can either go there first and be taken to the spa, or just turn right and follow the path for a few metres and you’ll come to it.

And this Anantara Spa has a beautiful contemporary Chinese
style to it, and is a lot bigger than it first appears. Larger, in fact,
than several ‘stand-alone’ spas on Samui, and offering a whole
lot more, too.

The spacious treatment suites are both upstairs and downstairs in smart white pillared buildings which form three sides of a large garden-style courtyard, and come complete with private steamrooms and bathtubs.

And a popular treatment here is the unique Thai Herbal Compress Massage, whilst the favourite package is the
Anantara Lawana Coconut Paradise, which utilises Samui’s ubiquitous coconut in most of its treatments,
including an ‘Essence White Coconut Scrub’, an ‘Essence White Coconut Wrap’ and a ‘Signature Coconut Massage’. One thing’s for sure, and
that’s whichever Anantara Spa you choose to visit, you’ll have a
great spa experience.
